Album Backstory:

I am what you might call a Conceptual Musician and I don’t really play musical instruments as such, a little like Malcolm McLaren. And this is a concept album made for the purpose of accompanying my autobiography, though I do intend to put a band together to reproduced it.

I am often asked how I produced my music, and no, it is not AI generated, in fact I hate the whole AI revolution, maybe I just don’t fully understand it as of yet. As a creative, it drives me mad when someone produces something of value and then the general assumption is that it must be AI, well it’s not I’m glad to say.

In 2015 I finished writing my autobiography and five years later in 2020 it was published. Another five years later in 2025 I completed the album “Unconventional”. A self imposed personal project which cost thousands to produce, but was worth every penny.

The Lyrics: All of the lyrics for the album are 100% written by myself and I copyrighted them back in 1992. They all originated from my poetry which in part I used as a coping mechanism and an escapism from my abusive childhood, and later tweaked them to be used as lyrics for songs.

The Music: As a conceptual musician I know in my head exactly the kinds of sounds I want to hear for each track and I have a good understanding of music. I paid session musicians for many aspects of many of the tracks to use as base layers. Then with the use of DAW software I introduced some of my own created sounds, mixed, blended and remixed until I achieved the sounds that I wanted. Some of the final tweaks were produced in various other music editing tools.

The Videos: As a video editor I extensively researched stock websites and purchased professionally made video clips and images to suit the criteria of each story that I wanted to convey, sometimes spending endless days hunting for the right elements for each track.

The video for the track “Going Up” is credited to STORROR who are an amazing and crazy group, and a Pro Parkour Team. Their out of this world skills naturally fitted my track of escapism. Please check them out at storror.com and on YouTube.

The video for “outro” is of myself made in 2015 and designed to accompany my book.

The AI: Despite my dislike of AI I have to admit that reluctantly I did use AI for the Newsreader on the videos at the start and end of the album (Unconventional and News24 Update). And I also used AI to change my own singing voice as I was not happy with production results of my own voice.

The Results: Ultimately, no matter how I created this album, it is a worthy music album in its own right. I appreciate some of the imperfections but at least I have the satisfaction of knowing that it is original and unique with intense, relatable human stories and a production of significance. Conceived, produced and mixed by myself, a time consuming project which consisted of over 2,500 files and more than 300Gb of data.

I thank you for your time and interest in reading my story and trust that you enjoy the album…

Please keep checking back for updates, as this entire project still has much more to offer and is an ongoing journey. Thank you.
